Towanda Historic District Walking Tour
Nestled along a natural transportation route, the majestic Susquehanna River Valley, Towanda grew and prospered during the nineteenth century fueled at first by the coal industry and later the lumber industry. Most of the 441 historic structures within the Towanda Historic District were built during this time. It has been said that the District contains the largest and most varied collection of period architecture in Bradford County. To learn more of Towanda’s history, please visit www.towandaborough.org. French Azilum Historic Site
For an experience rich in history visit the French Azilum Historic Site where the loyalists to French King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette fled to save themselves from persecution and the guillotine. Located on a horseshoe bend of the Susquehannna River just south of Towanda, French Azilum was established exclusively for the refugees, who first entered the area in 1793 during the French Revolution. Visit the site to see The LaPorte House, which was built by the son of a founding member of the community, as well as a foundation believed to be the remnants to the Grande Maison, which may have been the house that was once built for Marie Antoinette and her two children. In addition French Azilum houses artifacts from the day, such as pottery, farm tools, and fashions from the times.
